Do we need to cross the river by ferry to reach Riverview Rise Retreats?
Yes. The property sits on the Cowirra side of the Murray, directly opposite Mannum township, so every arrival crosses on the Mannum vehicle ferry. Two ferries operate at the crossing and one of them runs 24 hours a day, so there is no closing time to plan around. The crossing is free, takes around seven minutes, and you stay in your car. Once across, turn left and continue two kilometres up Hunter Road. Wait times can be longer on long weekends and public holidays.
Do we need a car for a Murray River stay?
Yes, for almost everyone. There is no public transport to the property and the ferry is a vehicle crossing, so a car is how you arrive and how you reach Mannum, the cellar doors at Langhorne Creek or dinner at Monarto. The exception is guests who arrive by helicopter, since there is a helipad on the property, and a loan car is available for them so they are not stranded once they land.
When do the paddle-steamer cruises run from Mannum?
Mannum is the birthplace of the Murray paddle-steamer trade and cruises still depart from the town wharf, but schedules are seasonal and vary between operators, with more sailings over summer and school holidays and fewer mid-winter. Book ahead rather than turning up, particularly for lunch and sunset cruises, and check directly with the operator for current times.
Can we kayak or swim directly from the property?
Not from the villas themselves. Riverview Rise Retreats sits on an escarpment above the river, which is what gives every villa its outlook, so the water is below you rather than at your door. Kayak hire and launch points are available in and around Mannum, a short ferry ride away. Most couples treat the river as something to look at from the spa bath or the patio rather than something to get into.
Where do we eat if we do not want to cook?
Your villa arrives stocked with continental and cooked breakfast provisions and has a full kitchen, and platters can be delivered to the villa so you never have to leave. If you would rather go out, Mannum has the Pretoria Hotel, the Community Club, Firestone and Cafe Mannum for pub classics, all a short ferry ride away. For something more memorable, Kutjera Restaurant and Bar at Monarto Safari Resort is about twenty-five minutes and serves modern Australian cooking with native ingredients, overlooking the safari park waterhole.
